Over the past 20 million years in the area of the Carpathian Basin, a rich volcanic area in what is today central Slovakia and northern Hungary, which the biggest volcano was Štiavnica stratovolcano. After discontinuation, volcanic mountains in eastern Slovakia in the form of Slánske Vihorlatské Mountains and in the form of nearly continuous chain of volcanoes in western Ukraine to Romania.
Štiavnica stratovolcano was born 16.5 million years ago, in the period which geologists call the Miocene. Its creation was part of a collision of two tectonic plates,Eurasian and African. Also Carpathians and Alps had been created . Vulcan first emerged from the shallow sea gradually Parathetis and amounted to 4.5 km above sea level. At its foot was a subtropical forest, on top of his eternal ice and snow. Subsequently snuffed out, and followed a long calm period. After this period of depression, the volcano again woke up and accumulated large amounts of magma.
Attention!!! Štiavnica stratovolcano from the geological point of view is considered to be finally extincti, and is recorded in the database the geological map of institutions and NASA.
